Demolition of old Teen Center

Demolition of old "Teen Center”

What: Demolition of the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County former Teen Center

When: Monday, October 31, 2011 – beginning at 8 a.m.

Where: Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County Campus, 1304 Ashe Street. Hendersonville, NC 28792

Background: The 1,500 square foot home was once a residence in the Green Meadows community. After being acquired by the club in the 1990’s, the structure accommodated the Boys & Girls Club teen programs. Following an extensive campus renovation in 2008/2009, which included construction of a new Teen Center, the building has stood empty. Club leadership has decided to demolish the building to make way for future opportunities, explained Scottie Parks, club executive director.

"At the moment, it is just going to provide us with some green space for kids to use for outdoor play, but we’re exploring other possible uses for the site in the future as well,” Parks said. "One dream is to build a Teen Enterprise Center that would help older club members cultivate job readiness skills, explore higher education opportunities and maybe even run some of their own club businesses.”

About the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County

The mission of the club is to inspire and enable young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, caring citizens. An all-inclusive membership costs $5.00 per child, per year. The club opened in 1993, serving a handful of members in a 2,000 square foot building. Today the downtown Hendersonville campus has expanded to 35,000 square feet and accommodates youth from every school in the county public schools system. In 2010, the club served over 1,500 young people through programs focusing on education and career development, sports, fitness and recreation, health and life skills, character and leadership and the arts.
